AT&T and Verizon continue to expand their 4G LTE coverage in the U.S. to get a strong foothold in the high-speed wireless business. Verizon expanded its 4G LTE coverage in several regions of Central Texas and AT&T has added Gaffney to its list of 4G areas in the U.S.

The tough competition in the U.S. wireless business is a game of survival of the fittest. Verizon may be ahead in the race with the largest and most reliable 4G network across the nation, but other carriers like AT&T are slowly gaining ground. Verizon continues to expand further in order to sustain the dominance.

Verizon Wireless announced Wednesday that it has activated 158 4G LTE cell sites in the Central Texas region to improve data coverage and deliver 10 times faster download speeds than before. "After launching our 4G LTE in Austin in April 2011, we're excited to expand the network to surrounding cities and counties," Lee Maschmann, Central Texas executive director at Verizon Wireless, said in a press release. "At Verizon, we strive to bring the fast speeds and superior reliability of our 4G LTE network to more customers across Texas."

The new addition includes Burnet and 4 miles west of town along Hoovers Valley Road. In addition, the cell site activation in Red Rock offers digital voice, broadband data access, and 4G LTE service in about 7 mile radius from the intersection of FM 20 and FM 812.  Similarly, the city of Wimberley and for about 5 miles east of town along FM 3237 is covered with all three services in addition to a 2 mile radius around the intersection of FM 1431 and White Hills Lane.

Verizon 4G LTE service is available across 500 U.S. markets and the expansion is a step in covering its 3G footprints with 4G network.

AT&T also continues to expand its 4G coverage in the U.S. but has a lot to catch up on compared to Verizon. The carrier is determined to cover 420 total cities with nearly 270 million people using the service by the end of this year. The service is currently available in more than 370 markets, making it the second largest 4G operator in the U.S. In the latest move, AT&T announced Thursday that it has covered Gaffney under its 4G.
