The U.K.'s Royal Air Force (RAF) has started airstrikes against the Daesh positions in Syria, British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said Thursday.

"I approved yesterday a series of targets in the Omar oilfield, well heads...The Tornados were successful in striking those targets," Fallon said, according to BBC News.

Four Tornados from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus took part in the first British air offensive in Syria, a spokesman from the Ministry of Defense said.

"RAF Tornadoes have just returned from their first offensive operation over Syria and have conducted strikes," he added, according to CNN.

The airstrikes come just hours after the British Parliament approved Prime Minister David Cameron's request to launch air raids against ISIS targets in Syria, according to Voice of America. A majority of British legislators supported Cameron's request after a 10-hour debate in the House of Commons Wednesday night.

"I believe the House has taken the right decision to keep the UK safe - military action in Syria as one part of a broader strategy," Cameron tweeted after the vote.

The U.K. has been engaged in air attacks against the Islamic State in Iraq for over a year. It now joins the U.S., France and Russia in carrying out air attacks against ISIS locations in Syria.
