A Swiss company seeks to take selfies to a whole new level. Not content with simply improving selfie shooters with more megapixels or sensors, Dacuda wants to offer more interesting selfie printed outputs. And this is not merely a photograph but a 3-D printed model of the person in the image.

Dacuda has already built an app called 3DSelfie for its ground-breaking selfie-taking technology. It includes an algorithm that allows selfie takers to connect to 3-D scanning technology so that their photos can be 3-D printed.

"Today already there are many people who want to share their memories - so for example a wedding or a birthday, or if you are pregnant - and you can do that with photographs, but now you can also make these memories tangible," Erik Fonseca told Popular Science.

3DSelfie, which is set to be launched later this year, could be the first technology of its kind. There is a U.S. company called CoKreate that offers similar technology, but the photo subject has to go to a brick-and-mortar studio. Users who want 3-D selfies must secure an appointment for a photoshoot and undergo a full-body 3-D scanning process before the captured images can be 3-D printed, according to 3D Print.

3DSelfie appears to be a technology that would no longer require an elaborate process or a studio setup as users could perform most of the work themselves using a smartphone.

All in all, 3-D printed selfies might just be the next big thing in tech. CoKreate is currently making waves in Los Angeles and is planning to expand to other locations because of the uptick in the demand for their 3-D services.
