Capes were once important pieces out outerwear during the cold and rain, but as fashion transcended, this clothing item along with cloaks and ponchos were no longer part of the average wardrobe. However, capes debuted at the fashion runway not too long ago and it looks like the style is ripe for the season. In fact, it has already become part of high street fashion for men, according to the Telegraph.

"They're a natural progression from the last couple of collections we've had. Two years ago, we were loving the blanket scarf, and last year we saw a trickle of capes into the knitwear and accessories department," said Rebecca Parker, a personal shopper for Topman.

Fashion label ASOS recently listed its caped lounge wear for men on their online shop, and the soft-jersey fabric looks mighty comfortable to wear. "Garments with extra volume are selling really well - from over-sized tees, through to cowl neck tops and drop crotch trousers. And ponchos and capes are all part of the development of this trend," said John Mooney, ASOS's creative director for menswear.

But capes are not just menswear staples as brands like Rachel Zoe, Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren have the garment for women.

There's right way to stylishly wear capes, cloaks and ponchos so that you won't look like you're about to perform in a stage play. Below are some tips:

1) Never wear your capes with bulky tops. Use slim-fit pieces underneath as there should be definition and contrast, according to The Loop.

2) Don't over layer your clothes. If you have to wear a cape over a coat, make sure that the coat is tailored and slim-fitted.

3) Play with fabric, textures and lengths. Coats and tops with lightweight fabric work best with cloak or capes with thicker material. Long, lightweight ponchos will look like giant scarf, which you can use to accessorize your wardrobe.

4) Sometimes, you can style it up by putting a belt over the cloak, but if the material is thick and heavy, ditch the belt altogether. It will just make you look bulkier.
