Police reported that four people were injured when a shooting broke out at Washington Square Mall in Indianapolis Wednesday evening.

The shooting occurred at around 6:30 p.m. outside a Target store. Investigators say that a male suspect entered the mall and exchanged words with a man he apparently knew before shooting him, reported NBC's Indiana affiliate WTHR-TV. Two other people were injured after they were hit by ricochet fire, while another was injured after she fell while trying to flee the scene.

"This is not a random act and it looks like the suspect and the victim knew each other," Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Deputy Chief of Operations Brian Mahone said.

Police say that the gunman and the intended target had some kind of issue with one another, but they failed to elaborate on the matter.

"We have a pretty good idea that these two had something going on," Mahone continued.

Police do note, however, that the shooting is not related to recent high-profile police takedowns of drug suspects, adding that there were no signs of gang-related activity, according to FOX's Indiana affiliate WXIN-TV.

Mahone also noted that the location of the shooting at the mall was just a coincidence, adding that the victim and gunman could have met each other anywhere, leading to the same conclusion.

"This could have been a mall, a park, the gas station," Mahone said, according to FOX News. "This could have been anywhere that these two individuals ran into each other."

Police are now searching for the suspect who fled the scene wearing dark clothing, they have nothing to identify the suspect beyond that.
