Warning: The following contains possible spoilers for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

"Star Wars" fans have likely noticed that Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker has been virtually nonexistent in the promotional campaign for J.J. Abrams' upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Well, the director admitted that that strategy was "no accident."

Luke's absence and Abrams' cryptic words have spurred some fans to theorize that everyone's favorite Jedi (although, admittedly, I'm more of an Obi-Wan Kenobi fan myself) has become horribly disfigured or even turned to the Dark Side in "The Force Awakens." Extras caught up with Abrams and asked him for his thoughts on the rumor.

"I saw that too. I'm always interested in seeing people's theories," the director said. "What'll be cool when people finally see the movie and see what it really is. Hopefully some people will say, 'I was right,' other people will be like, 'All right!' You want people to be debating things even before the movie comes out, it's a dream!"

Luke is rumored to be in self-imposed exile throughout the majority of the film, with the new generation of heroes (Finn, Rey, Poe Dameron) searching for him in "The Force Awakens." Why he's possibly in exile remains to be seen, though there are a few specific theories that have been tossed around.

What isn't a mystery is the possibility of fans getting new "Star Wars" footage any time soon. Abrams essentially put the kibosh on that when he told Extras that fans should only expect TV spots from here on out.

"We're getting very close, the next thing's really gonna be the movie," Abrams said. "There will be commercials, but no more trailers...We've all been working really hard to give people something that will be special to them. Our fingers are just very tightly crossed that when people see the movie they'll like it."

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will (finally) hit theaters on Dec. 18.
