A woman was out hunting waterfowl Saturday at a wildlife area in Indiana when she was shot by her dog after it stepped on the trigger of her firearm, authorities said.

Prospective hunter Allie Carter, 25, had left her 12-gauge shotgun on the ground without the safety on at the Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area when her chocolate Labrador stepped on the trigger, causing the gun to fire and hitting her point blank in the foot, according to BBC News.

What makes this incident notable, however, is that her dog's name is Trigger. In short, Trigger stepped on the trigger of a shotgun and shot his owner in the foot.

Carter suffered injuries to her left foot and toes and was released after being treated at two hospitals, Indiana conservation officer Jonathan Boyd said, according to the New York Daily News.

A local hunter said that the dog shouldn't be blamed for the incident, as the shooting was seemingly accidental.

"That was more human error than anything," Deloren Thompson told ABC's Indiana affiliate WBND. "I've hunted with dogs and stuff before and never had problems."

Treat every gun like it's loaded, Boyd recommended, adding that hunters should keep the safety on and point the gun away from them.

Boyd also noted that Carter had not completed a hunter education course and urged all prospective hunters - as well as any of their companions - to do so.
