A video from 2013 has surfaced showing a Florida police officer being repeatedly stabbed by a homeless man while trying to prevent him from blowing up a gas station.

Officer Mario Gutierrez was on patrol when he came across Dominique Jean, 51, at the Shell gas station at Northwest 25th Street and LeJeune Road on Oct. 29, 2013, according to NBC's South Florida affiliate WTVJ.

Surveillance video shows Jean lifting the cap off an underground gas tank and setting fire to newspapers as he tried to cause an explosion through the gas station's underground valve access port.

As Gutierrez approaches the suspect to personally confront him, however, the suspect grabs an 8-inch knife and screwdriver from the ground and tackles the officer, knocking Gutierrez to the floor and stabbing him multiple times, according to the New York Daily News.

"He attacked me. He attacked me with a large knife and a screwdriver," Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez was seriously injured during the attack, receiving multiple wounds to his arm, leg, back and chest. However, despite his injuries, Gutierrez was able to grab his gun and shoot Jean.

"All I thought about was, he's not going to kill me. I'm going to win, because I want to see my family," Gutierrez said earlier this year as he was presented with the prestigious congressional badge of bravery for his actions, according to Local 10.

Police reports indicate that Gutierrez had tried radioing for backup four times during the assault, but failed since his radio didn't work properly.

Jean was pronounced dead at the scene and was later found to be in possession of box cutters, in addition to the screwdriver and knife he used in the stabbing.

In the meantime, Gutierrez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he underwent several surgical procedures.

Gutierrez has no regrets about the incident despite nearly dying.

"I love what I do. I love being a policeman. I love serving the community. It's a calling. It's a passion," he said.
