The mother and her boyfriend who had been charged for the killing of a two-year-old girl, who later became known as Baby Doe after her corpse washed up inside a trash bag on a Boston Harbor beach, appeared in court Tuesday.

Rachel Bond and her boyfriend, Michael McCarthy, were charged in September in connection with the death of Bond's daughter, Bella. The two appeared together in Dorchester District Court Tuesday, though the appearance was just a formality with attorneys discussing future logistics, since the pair have yet to be indicted, according to MSNBC.

Assistant District Attorney David Deakin informed the judge the defense wanted to do an autopsy for Bella, asking for funds for a pathologist to examine the toddler's body, which the presiding judge, Lisa Ann Grant, granted, reported NBC News. The two will make their next court appearance Nov. 19.

Bella's remains were found on Deer Island in June. State authorities launched an investigation following the discovery to determine who she was and how she died. Police got a break in the case three months later when Bond told a friend McCarthy killed Bella, according to the Associated Press.

The lawyer representing McCarthy claimed he knew nothing about Bella's death.
