Authorities in Connecticut have rescued 60 cats and a pair of dogs from a home that was deemed unfit for people, and pets, to live in.

When neighbors in Wolcott, Conn. started getting an unpleasant odor from one of the properties in the area, they reported the matter to the authorities.

Sgt. Patrick Malloy, who responded to the call, said that the house was "unlivable." The police rescued two dogs along with 60 feline companions from the Frinch Road residence. The lawns of the house were strewn with garbage bags filled with cat feces, according to officials, reported Examiner.

The home owner said that he was trying to run a cat rescue and may face animal cruelty charges, the police say. This is because many of the cats were underweight and dehydrated when taken from the house. All of the animals are being given a veterinary check-up, according to WCBV5.

A cat found dead in a freezer is likely to add to the owner/cat rescuers woes, though authorities believe that its death was not related to living conditions in the house and that it had been euthanized, reported ABC News.
