American actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi Quaid were taken into custody during an attempt to cross the U.S. border from Canada on Friday night, according to Vermont State Police. The "Independence Day" actor was detained by troopers at the Highgate Springs port of entry as they were trying to enter into Vermont from Quebec, according to NBC News.

"On October 9, 2015, Randall Quaid and Evi Quaid attempted to cross the U.S. Border from Canada into the U.S. and were detained at the Highgate Port Of Entry," Vermont State Police said in a statement. "While at the Port Of Entry, U.S. Customs determined both individuals are fugitives from justice from the State of California. U.S. Customs notified the Vermont State Police of the outstanding warrants."

The Quaids fled to Canada in October 2010 after skipping a court appearance, where they were supposed to face felony vandalism charges. They were accused of causing damages to the tune of $5,000 to a property they previously owned, according to CNN.

Randy Quaid, who is actor Dennis Quaid's older brother, said they sought refuge in Canada out of fear that they will be killed for their money by "Hollywood star whackers," who they they claimed were responsible for the deaths of actors David Carradine and Heath Ledger.

The arrest takes place days after the Canadian Border Service Agency detained Randy after he attended a regular check-in with the federal agency, as HNGN previously reported.

Randy Quaid's permanent residency request was denied in 2012 and was ordered to leave Canada by Oct. 14.

Randy Quaid is being held at the North West State Correctional Center while Evi Quaid is in custody at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility. Their bail has been set at $500,000 each.
