You'd think simple and classic meals like sandwiches and eggs would come as an easy task to those unfamiliar in the kitchen, but week three of "Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition" proved that these celebs really have no idea what they're doing. As boot camp gets more and more challenging, the contestants are just getting more and more confused, and little things like the fact that there are more cheeses out there than just Swiss and American nearly stumps them to the point of no return. They are making some major improvements, and mentors Rachael Ray and Anne Burrell aren't cringing as much when the have to taste the finished product, but these celebs still have a long way to go.
There are hundreds of sandwiches out there named after famous and iconic celebrities, and for week three's main plate challenge, Kendra Wilkinson, Barry Williams, Chris Soules, Jwoww and Ellen Cleghorne had to come up with a sandwich that represented them in some way, shape or form. Ray and Burrell were only trying to help by showing them how to make some of their favorite sandwiches, but this just seemed to confuse them even more and they went into the challenge with barely any ideas. Their sandwiches had to have a good balance of texture and flavors, and the results turned out to be pretty impressive despite their confusion in the kitchen.
For the red team, Wilkinson and Cleghorne produced very different sandwiches. Cleghorne decided on a chicken sandwich with a pineapple and mango chutney as a way to remember her grandma from the Caribbean, and the fact that she even knew what chutney is was impressive enough for Ray to love it and be proud of her ambition. Wilkinson cleverly settled for a spicy sloppy joe because she believes she's a hot mess, but in the end, her soggy potatoes were an extremely sad attempt at chips, and Ray had no choice but to put her in the bottom two.
Soules and Williams both decided on burgers as the sandwiches to best represent themselves. Soules settled for a bacon-stuffed burger with bleu cheese, tomato, spices, horseradish sauce and even more bacon on top. While it's hard to go wrong with that much bacon, and his burger was juicy and seasoned well, Burrell just couldn't get past the fact that Soules called his spicy vinegar pepper side salad a "Cankersore Salad." Once she finally gained the courage to even try something with a name like that, the flavors were so overpowering she nearly choked. Thank god Soules is so pretty, though, or she would have been livid.
Williams' burger had a lot going on but ended up impressing Burrell enough to name it the best dish for the red team. He incorporated California, where he grew up, with a Midwestern feel to represent where he eventually moved. From shallots, to avocado, to soy sauce, to ham and three different types of cheese, it sounded like an absolute mess, but Burrell actually thought it worked. The moist avocado balanced out his dry burger and she just loved the cheesiness of it.
With Soules and Williams using up all the chopped meat, Jwoww was stumped, as her plan was to stick to her roots and make a classic meatball parm. Shockingly, she thought outside the box a little and used sausage to make meatballs, and while Burrell was impressed with her innovative thinking, she wanted to push her out of this "parm" comfort zone. Even though Jwoww stuck with what was familiar, her seasoning was on point, and Burrell had no choice but to put Soules - who we're pretty sure she has a major crush on - in the bottom two.
For the blind elimination challenge, Soules and Wilkinson went head to head to tackle a simple task -one that Burrell and Ray even showed them how to do. They had six minutes and just three eggs to make one perfect sunny side-up egg and one perfect over-easy egg. Having just watched the mentors demonstrate how to perfect these eggs earlier in the day, it was interesting to see how the whole thing went in one ear and out the other. In the end, Soules couldn't complete the task and overcooked his eggs so much the yolk wasn't even runny. Burrell was extremely sad to see him go and even jokingly asked for him to turn in all of his clothes instead of just his apron. He did go home with $5,000 for his charity, Feeding America, though, so he was pleased. He even made all "Bachelor" fans' dreams come true when he turned to the camera, held up a red spatula and asked "will you accept my spatula?"
"It was fun, I wanted to stay longer. I was hoping that I'd have a chance at winning this thing, but, you know, I think there's better cooks here than me. It's pretty clear, of that, and it was a fun opportunity, and I'm glad that...I get to be a part of it," he told Food Network following his elimination. "I would have loved to have stayed longer and learned a lot more, but hopefully this had kind of lit a fire underneath me to want to learn more. It's an opportunity to have...just turned me on to, and make me realize that, maybe I can do this."
As for who he thinks has the best shot at winning, he's rooting for Cleghorne. "I think she's...uncovered a part of her that she really never knew existed. And I just kind of see that she's in her element," he explained. "She's really come a long ways, and I think she has that potential to really be successful in cooking."
