In an interview with Billboard magazine for their Oct. 17 issue, Selena Gomez revealed she spent time away from the spotlight to undergo chemotherapy after being diagnosed with lupus disease, according to People.

The "Revival" singer opened up about her diagnosis, saying that in spite of all the speculation and rumors, she took the time-off to deal with her illness.

"I was diagnosed with lupus, and I've been through chemotherapy," Gomez said, according to Billboard. "That's what my break was really about. I could've had a stroke."

Many believed the 23-year-old's break had something to do with her breakup with Justin Bieber and/or her addiction struggles.

"I wanted so badly to say, 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're a--holes.' I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again," she said, referring to gossip-mongers who made assumptions about her hiatus.

"I'm so f---ing nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me. I've been working since I was 7. I've been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17," she added. "It's so disappointing that I've become a tabloid story. That hate motivated me."

Not only is her new album coming out this week, Gomez also announced a "Revival" world tour last Friday, as HNGN previously reported.
