"Gotham" showrunner recently spoke to The Nerdist about the ongoing Jerome/Joker theory and promised a resolution soon.

Well, consider the mystery resolved.

After months of rabid speculation from fans, it turns out that Heller is the one who got the last laugh. Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) was killed off in last night's episode of Fox's "Gotham," but his violent showmanship will live on if "Gotham's" closing moments are to be believed.

Jerome, the villainous leader of the Maniax, had been teased as the teenaged version of Batman's most iconic foe for some time. He attempted to murder Bruce Wayne in last night's episode but was foiled by none other than Theo Galavan (James Frain), the same man who sprung him from Arkham Asylum, in a PR move to make himself look like a savior.

However, Jerome's maniacal tendencies seemed to inspire a handful of Gotham residents; an uneasy drunk in a bar, a child ignored by his parents, a deranged couple. There seems to be no shortage of candidates to eventually assume the Joker mantle.

Though Jerome may be gone, "Gotham" will not want for treacherous villains. Heller teased two upcoming additions to the roster that will make Batman comic book fans very excited.

"Something we're going to see this year is the underbelly of Wayne Enterprises," Heller told The Nerdist. "When we go there and see what they're doing down there, we're going to be introducing the great Dr. Hugo Strange and Mr. Freeze."

"Gotham" airs Mondays at 8:00 PM ET on Fox.
