The birth of Barbie Doll dates back to 1959. Its creator, Ruth Handler, originally showcased the doll as an adult sex toy, but Mattel, the company distributing it, advertised Barbie in children's programs and the American International Toy Fair, according to Boston Globe.

At that time, Barbie's look was inspired by a European Bild Lilli Doll that Hander spotted during a trip. She had on exotic makeup with cats' eyes, and her lips was closed but not puckered, according to USA Today.

As the 60s rolled and the doll became much more in demand, Barbie had a makeover and began to look more youthful with her softer makeup. Her lips was also changed to a pouty rounded shape. At that time Mattel also came out with the Twist 'N Turn Barbie, which made the doll more mobile.

The 70s was the disco era, and Barbie's appearance was once again changed to a more glamorous and groovy style that appealed to the decade. She also started wearing bluer eyeshadow and longer lashes.

The 80s saw the release of a more diversified Barbie, as she came with different skin tones, hair styles and hair color based on African-American and Hispanic models. The 80s also saw Barbie acquiring an "excessive wardrobe," according to Count On Cross.

By the time the 90s hit, Barbie's clothes obsession turned to hair obsession, as she had longer hair that could be teased or permed. Totally Hair Barbie remains the best-selling Barbie, according to Bloomberg.

In the new millennium, Barbie's looks featured a more radical style with tattoos and pink hair, according to USA Today, which eventually toned down with more natural, subtle makeup.
