"Hotel Transylvania 2" scared up a whopping $47.5 million in its opening weekend, setting a new September record.

The animated sequel broke its own record from 2012 by $5 million. The $80 million movie featured celebrity voices including Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, David Spade and many more.

Sony Pictures hopes to bring a third installment of the beloved film franchise to the screen.

"There are a lot of stories left to tell," Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures president of worldwide distribution, told Variety. "Adam and the filmmakers have created an unforgettable animated world that plays to audiences everywhere."

"The Intern," Nancy Meyer's first film since 2009's "It's Complicated," came in second at the box office, earning $18.2 million in its opening weekend. It was followed by "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," grossing $14 million in its second weekend.

The critically acclaimed "Everest" opened wide this weekend but brought in a disappointing $13 million, adding to the $7.2 million the film made in limited release. Based on real events, the adventure thriller played better overseas earning $73.3 million.

The Johnny Depp-starrer "Black Mass" rounded out the top five after box office, bringing in 11.5 million on its second weekend.
