The Boston Red Sox have decided upon a new general manager a little over a month after Ben Cherington resigned from the post.

Mike Hazen was named Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Red Sox on Thursday, the team announced on Twitter.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports first reported the news minutes before Boston made the announcement.

Previous rumors suggested Frank Wren, De Jon Watson, Billy Eppler, Quinton McCracken and Ray Montgomery were also candidates for the position. Former Angels' GM Jerry Dipoto (hired by Cherington) currently serves as an adviser with the club and it's unknown what his role will be with Hazen now in charge.

New president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski filled the position with an in-house candidate, as Hazen was the team's assistant general manager behind Cherington since January. Hazen has worked in the Red Sox organization for 10 seasons and it's his 15th in the MLB.

"Over his 10 years with the Red Sox, Mike has proven to be an invaluable member of the baseball operations department," Dombrowski said in a statement, via MLB.com. "We are thrilled to have him in this position and I'm excited to have him working with me on every aspect of baseball operations."

"Today is a great day for the Boston Red Sox," added Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer Sam Kennedy. "Mike's leadership, work ethic, and passion for the game are second to none. His experience, combined with his local roots, make him the perfect choice to work alongside Dave as we head into 2016."

Hazen, 39, previously served as the team's head of player development and amateur Scouting from 2012-2014. The Red Sox first hired him in 2006 to become their director of player development.
