"Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." premiered last night and, if I’m being honest—it was very regular. Now, don’t get me wrong, “regular” doesn’t mean bad. It simply means regular. The show is about a team of promising young talent who have to work together to protect human from supernatural forces they may not understand. It’s something that has been done before.

When fans heard that there was a TV show that would be a spinoff of “Marvel’s The Avengers” they were excited. While I’m sure there are some fans of S.H.I.E.L.D.—and many fans of Joss Whedon’s work— out there, Nick Fury and his gang weren’t the reason fans flocked to see the blockbuster movie. They went to see the movie for one reason. Comic book fans read Marvel comics for one reason. So far, ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is missing that reason—the Marvel superheroes.

Pretty soon fans are going to get over the white letters with a red background sitting over the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” title. They’re going to get over the fact that Agent Coulson didn’t really die at the hands of Loki in the Avengers movie. They’re going to get over the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. has really cool gadgets.

Pretty soon, the fans are going to want the superheroes.

Now, I understand us viewers are getting what was advertised. The show is called “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, not the “Avengers of S.H.I.E.L.D.” or ABC’s “Marvel’s Superheroes”. Also, Joss Whedon told reporters the TV show cannot at all affect the story of the second Avengers movie. However, if ABC’s new Tuesday night hit is going to live up to the hype, Iron Man, Thor , Captain America and some of their friends (and probably some of their enemies), may need to make an appearance.
