Pope Francis landed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, on Tuesday, officially beginning his highly anticipated U.S. visit, according to Yahoo! News.

The pope was greeted by President Barack Obama and the First Family, as well as Vice President Joe Biden and his wife. A crowd of spectators cheered for Francis as he exited the plane and stepped onto the red carpet, where he shook hands with top Catholic officials.

Francis flew to Andrews after departing Cuba, where he spent the last four days, according to Fox News. The pope is expected to meet with Obama Wednesday at the White House.

This is the pope's first visit to the United States. He touched down at Andrews at 3:49 p.m. local time and was greeted by singing and chanting from the watching crowd. Francis answered some questions from reporters before deboarding from the plane, according to NBC News Los Angeles. He spoke about this trip to Cuba and his upcoming schedule for the rest of the week, which he plans to spend in America.

On Thursday, the pope will be in New York to give the evening prayer at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Friday, he will address the U.N. during the General Assembly.
