The season 9 premiere of "The Big Bang Theory" officially gave us everything we've been waiting eight seasons for between Penny and Leonard, and the breakup we were too afraid to believe was true between Amy and Sheldon.

Season 9 picked up with Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) where we left them, running off to Vegas to say "I Do." While you could cut the tension with a knife during their pre-wedding car ride as Leonard finally revealed to Penny that he'd kissed another woman when he was overseas, things settled down by the time they arrived in Vegas. "I want to," Penny tells Leonard about finally getting married. "We've put this off long enough. Let's do it."

The two decide to pick a wedding package that streams the wedding online so their friends can watch from home, though they find it hard to concentrate with Amy (Mayim Bialik) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) bickering the whole time. But despite the circumstances, Leonard and Penny still ended up have a very romantic and emotional wedding.

"Penny, we are made of particles that have existed since the moment the universe began," Leonard told Penny in his vows. "I like to think those atoms traveled 14 billion years through time and space to create us so we could be together and make each other whole." While Penny got emotional during the vows, and fans ate it right up, hers were a little more casual as she spoke the lyrics to "You Got a Friend in Me."

Things were going great during the ceremony, but the fight over his kiss with Mandy continued when he revealed that he still sees her at work.

While Leonard ends up spending his wedding night with Sheldon, you find out that he and Amy haven't really made any progress since their split. Sheldon failed to give Amy the time she needed to think things over, so she made what she first called "a break" and official breakup. On the bright side, we did finally get to find out where Sheldon got the engagement ring he planned on giving to Amy. Turns out, his mother gave it to him, and she won't take it back just yet.

As for what's in store for Amy and Sheldon in the future, executive producer Steve Molaro told Entertainment Tonight that he wants season nine to be "fresh, fun and funny."

"I understand where Amy was at," he said of the breakup. "I think she loves him and she knows that he loves her in whatever way he's capable of, but they've been together for over five years. And if it's your fifth anniversary night, and you're making out - because that's all you do - and the person you're making out with is really only thinking about 'The Flash' TV show, that's the thousandth straw on that camel's back. It may make you want to take a step back and be like, 'I care about this guy a lot but am I doing the right thing long-term for myself?'"

Parsons also weighed in on the split and how his character needs to do a little more if he wants to keep Amy around. "I do think we must be waiting on Sheldon to come to a better realization of not only that Amy is important to him, but specifically why," he said. "He will maybe be able to express that to her and maybe alter his behavior a little bit more to make her more inclined to want to continue."
