The season eight finale of 'The Big Bang Theory' gave us the wedding we've been waiting for for years, as well as the break up we thought would never come.

With Leonard and Penny finally on their way to tie the knot, things weren't so "happily ever after" for Amy (Mayim Bialik) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) as Amy decided she needed a break from her longtime boyfriend who seems to only be able to talk about things that aren't important to her, like The Flash.

Little did Amy know, Sheldon shockingly had gotten a ring and was prepared to propose. While Amy did end things, Bialik wanted to make sure that her fans understood it was a break, not a break up. Luckily for them, Sheldon is nothing like Ross Gellar of F.R.I.E.N.D.S., and will hopefully understand that this means they will be back together eventually.

"This is not a breakup," Bialik told Entertainment Weekly. "My mom kept asking me why all of her neighbors were asking if I'm kicked off the show. [Amy] needs space and the first episode explores how Sheldon deals with that notion."

Sheldon, who is usually an emotionless person, is actually really "hurt and confused" by the break, according to executive producer Steve Molaro. "This is not a science project that he can solve by thinking about it. He wants to resolve this and doesn't really know how to." "This is really out of his control and that's definitely not comfortable for him," Bialik added.

Amy doesn't take it so well, either, though.

"This is all new to her and this is as difficult for her as it is for him," Molaro told The Hollywood Reporter. "He's not making it any easier, so I think they are both feeling their way through this and going through and experiencing feelings and emotions that I don't think they were expecting. He's not good at leaving her alone. The one thing she asked for was a little bit of time to think and he's not going to give that to her."

As for when they'll get back together, it's hard to tell. "Until the time feels right to change what's happening," Molaro said about keeping them apart. "Right now, the dynamic has been fascinating and interesting. We're seeing all new colors for both of them as well as the way it impacts the group. There's not a set plan - we're feeling this out."

Find out what the future holds for Amy and Sheldon, and what she thinks of him proposing, when season 9 of "The Big Bang Theory" premiers Monday September 21 on CBS.
