Ice Cube is set to play a contemporary version of Ebenezer Scrooge in a modern-day retelling of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, according to Deadline.

In this particular Christmas film remake, which will see him team up once again with "Ride Along" director Tim Story, the rapper will play a rich real estate tycoon instead of a banker.

However, the plot of the film will remain the same, in that the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future will visit Scrooge, make him realize all of his wrongdoings and help him lead a path of salvation, RollingStone reported.

"Humbug" screenwriters Earl Richey Jones and Todd R Jones initially created the movie script for Relativity Media, but plans fell through when the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this past summer.

Aside from starring in the film, Ice Cube will also serve as its producer alongside Jeff Kwatinetz, and the screenwriters will be its co-producers.

The studio has yet to announce the film's release date, though sources from inside Universal say it's likely that it will be released in cinemas sometime in 2017, according to IGN.
