Campus police for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) were notified of an active shooter near the school premises on Sunday. A warning was immediately posted on the social media account requesting residents of the area to evacuate, seek shelter and lock their doors.

Both the campus and Cambridge police are still seeking the suspect who was able to flee the crime scene. The report stated that there was a gunshot victim injured in Main St. and Portland St. in Cambridge, which is located less than a mile away from MIT, according to the International Business Times.

The 25-year-old victim, a woman from Roxbury, was rushed to the hospital after she was shot in the leg. It has not yet been verified if the woman is an MIT student, CBS News reported.

"At this point it is too early to determine if she was a target. This is an ongoing and active investigation," said Jeremy Warnick, the spokesman for the Cambridge police, according to the Inquisitr.

An alert was announced later that the shooter was not on campus.

"Students are free to move about. This was not on campus," the MIT police dispatcher announced.

There was another incident during the carnival leaving five people hurt - four of them with minor injuries - after a fight started at the DJ's booth during the parade.

There was another shooting incident in the University of Utah that had two of its football players shot in the torso, although the shooting is being investigated as possibly gang-related.

Both suspects from this Sunday's incidents in Salt Lake City and Cambridge remain at large. Any information that might lead to the location of both suspects should be sent immediately to authorities.
