A homeless man in Boston contacted police after he found a backpack filled with nearly $40,000 worth of travelers checks and cash, helping authorities return the bag to it's owner, NBC reported.

According to a police statement, the "less than fortunate good samaritan" discovered the bag outside of a TJ Maxx Store in Dorchester, Mass. on Saturday at 5:44 p.m. Around one hour later, the owner retrieved his bag after positively identifying it to authorities.

"The good Samaritan could only provide officers with his name and the address of the shelter where he currently lives," the statement said.

A spokeswoman from the Boston Police Department said on Monday that they were looking into arranging a news conference for the two men to speak.

In addition to tens of thousands of dollars in cash and checks, the man's bag also contained his passport and other personal papers.

The names of the homeless man and bag owner were not released by authorities.

"People will probably tell him he's nuts, but homeless people are the first to help you out," said Bob Boisselle, who stays at the same shelter as the anonymous good samaritan, to The Boston Herald. "They don't have anything, but they'll give you what they do have."

"Homeless people know what it's like to be down and out," added Boisselle, who has been homeless since 2005.

A homeless man from a different Boston shelter also commended his efforts.

"He's got a great heart," said Aaron Toye. "He did the right thing."
