City council members in Waller County, Texas hope that naming a road after Sandra Bland, who died days after her arrest in police custody, will serve as a constant reminder of the injustices she suffered. University Drive, close to Bland's alma mater, will be changed to Sandra Bland Parkway for three years before voted on again by the council, according to USA Today.

The council says it also hopes that the new name would be a reminder to law enforcement to always follow proper practices when making stops on that street - the same street Bland was stopped on for not using her turning signal on July 10.

The Prairie View City Council voted Tuesday night on the issue where Bland's mother and other supporters were present for the vote, according to NPR.

"I am overwhelmed, and I am just truly thankful to the city of Prairie View," said Bland's mother, Geneva Reed-Veal. "There's still so much more that needs to be done."

Three days after her arrest, Bland was found hanging in her cell, much to the dismay of her family. A medical examiner ruled Bland's death a suicide.

Bland's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Houston. The suit mentions state trooper Brian Encinia, the sheriff of Waller County, two prison guards and the Texas Department of Public Safety as the defendants, as previously reported by HNGN.
