At least seven people have been killed after being gored by bulls during Spain's summer festivals since the start of July.

An 18-year-old man died on Sunday after being gored by a bull during summer festival in northwest Spain, reported El Pais. His death brings the number of people killed by bulls during this year's summer festivals across Spain to seven.

Over the weekend, four people died after being gored by bulls across Spain. A local councillor, José Alberto Peñas López, died on Saturday in a town called Penafiel after being repeatedly attacked by a bull. Two other persons were gored to death on Friday.

Actor and noted animal rights activist, Ricky Gervais, condemned this year's bull run festivals in Spain, which has claimed seven lives so far.

"The truth is, I do prefer the bull to win. I'd rather you didn't fight a bull, but if you do, if you choose to torture an animal to death for fun, I hope it defends itself," Gervais said in a video posted on his YouTube page, according to CBC Canada.

"People will go and see it and say, 'Well, it's traditional.' So was slavery. We've moved on, haven't we? I mean surely progress, at its core, is society maximizing compassion and minimizing suffering?" he said.

Nearly 2,000 bullfights - corridas - are still held in the country every year, reported BBC. More than 7,000 bulls and steers were killed last year by bullfighters across Spain.
