Dorm rooms around the United States are starting to become packed with students and the first order of business for these kids and their parents is to make the new room more comfortable.

A trip to home stores is a must as college kids will need to personalize and style their own place. It's also important because, with such a small room, the kids will have to have lots of storage.

The size of an average dorm room is from 10 x 15 to 15 x 15, according to College Confidential, so there isn't much space to work with, but by carefully planning out the purchase, there is a lot a student can do with the small space.

Here are some style and storage tips to make the most of dorm living in a small space:

1. Purchase storage that offer multi-purpose functionality. An ottoman, for instance, can work both for seating and storage. Kohl's currently has a special section for dorm ottomans at buy one, get one deals.

Additionally, storage containers like Tupperware will be very handy with dormers. The Lunch-It container, for example, may be used to store food, but it can also store knick-knacks, such as pens, paper clips and other table items. It's colorful and it will keep the desk organized.

2. Spruce up the bed. Dorm mattresses are not the best to sleep on, so it may be good to pick out a mattress pad for that extra cushion. "Going in, I took college beds for granted...but that was a mistake. Freshmen will quickly realize how important bed comfort is," said junior student Christina Butan, via NBC News. "A mattress pad and a back rest pillow seriously make a world of difference - you will be in heaven."

If pressed for budget, bring an old blanket or duvet from home instead. You'll be surprised at how much this will make sleep more comfortable.

If possible, buy bed raisers as well, to place under the bed posts. It will add an extra room for storage.

Add colorful throw pillows to soften the bed and make it more inviting. Bed, Bath and Beyond currently has good choices on clearance.

3. Shower caddies are lifesavers in the bathroom. Pack all your essential grooming and hygiene stuff in one place, so that everything is within reach. Bed, Bath and Beyond also has practical choices for these too.

Dorm room hampers, not just laundry bags, are essential, so that clothes aren't all over the floor. Pick a sturdy one that stands on the floor. Wayfair has budget-friendly but stylish choices for these.

4. Get a proper garbage can for your dorm room to keep clutter to a minimum. This is usually part of dorm room provisions, however most offer tiny trash cans, according to Dorm Co. Replace small trash cans with one that is bigger and comes with a cover.

5. If you're sharing a room with another student, it would be better to discuss storage and decorating ideas ahead so that you don't buy similar items. You can also discuss theme and color schemes so that you know what to look for when purchasing.
