Six civilians have been killed in cross border firings and mortar bomb shelling by Pakistani troops in Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir since Saturday.

A woman was killed in mortar bomb shelling by Pakistani troops on Sunday, raising the death toll to six in latest firing and shelling in disputed Kashmir region, according to The Northlines.

"We are rushing to the areas to see how people can be evacuated from the shelling and firing zones. Heavy shelling is going on in the area," local official Nisar Ahmed told PTI.

Five civilians, including a village head, were killed and five other injured in multiple mortar bomb attacks by Pakistani troops at several Indian posts in Poonch district on Saturday, August 15, the Indian Independence Day, according to PTI.

India on Sunday summoned Pakistan's envoy in New Delhi Abdul Basit and lodged a strong protest over cross border shelling by Pakistani forces along the Line of Control (LOC), which divides Kashmir between both countries.

"The issue of continued unprovoked firing by Pakistani troops since August 8 had been raised on several occasions at the DGMO (director-general of military operations) level. Assurances were also received from the Pakistan military authorities that the firings would stop and their troops would be instructed accordingly. But in fact the firings have continued up until today," Indian foreign ministry said in a statement, according to Telegraph India.

Pakistan, however, blamed India for ceasefire violations and cross border firings.

"We are concerned about the ceasefire violations. In the month of July and August, there have been close to around 70 ceasefire violations from this (Indian) side of the working boundary," Basit told reporters in New Delhi, according to Ahmadabad Mirror.
