Meredith Vieira returned to the "Today" show this morning to help Hoda Kotb host the fourth hour of the program. She opened the show wearing a pair of huge black sunglasses, but she had a good reason for them: after slowly removing them, Vieira revealed a nasty and painful-looking black eye. "If you're going to laugh, I'm not going to tell you [how I got it]," she warned Kotb during the segment.

"I had to go to the bathroom and I didn't put the light on. And to get to the bathroom, you go through a little dressing room. And I had just come back from Los Angeles... and the suitcase is black, and the room is black, it's dark," she said, according to Us Weekly. The 61-year-old then explained she hit her head on a table.

Vieira then went to get her head looked at by a doctor. "The doc says I'm OK, but three lessons here: turn on the light, always get head injuries checked out and never marry a writer!" she wrote on Twitter.

After Vieira's story was told, Kotb read a post from the "Bouncing off Walls" blog written by Vieira's husband, writer Richard Cohen. "Meredith is a klutz, like a drunken sailor on a bender who collides with stationary objects and is a danger to herself. It may be time to hire a sitter to protect the poor, dottering dear from herself, especially after dark," he wrote on his site, Journey Man.

"If it had been a little bit lower, something bad could have happened," Vieira said of the accident.
