Former U.S. army contractor Sheldon Holland spent nearly $8,000 for two years trying to reunite with his war dog, which he considered to be a hero.

After 21 months, Holland was able to adopt the 7-year-old German shepherd from Afghanistan and brought him home to South Africa.

The two met in Pietermaritzburg in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, where Holland was a handler contracted to the U.S. army in Kandahar and Django, an explosives-sniffer dog, was assigned to work with him.

Two have been best friends since then, but they were separated from each other when Holland's mission ended and the U.S. troops started withdrawing from Afghanistan.

But while apart, Holland was worried about what would happen to Django and made sure he would find him.

"It's been an emotional few days," Holland said in a YouTube video. "He follows me around and doesn't let me out of his sight. Maybe he thinks he'll be left again."

Holland promised Django that he would bring him home and that they would go to the beach together. Hence, one of his first stops was on the sands of the KZN south coast.

"I promised him I would take him to the beach, so we did that," Holland said, according to Fox News.

The two are now together and spend time playing ball. Holland doesn't even mind being awakened by the dog just to play.
