Fiat Chrysler will unveil the 2016 Dodge Challenger coupe and Dodge Charger sedan on the weekend at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak, Mich. What is special about the event aside from the introduction of the new lineup is the revelation that the muscle cars will be offered in one of its wildest and almost iconic colors ever in its history, the vibrant shade of purple, which the company calls as Plum Crazy.

Dodge's press statement said that Purple Crazy is a limited production run and is only available for the 2016 models. It further stated that the color is offered on these Challenger variants: Challenger SXT Plus with the 305-hp 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6; Challenger R/T, R/T Plus, R/T Classic, R/T Shaker and R/T Plus Shaker with the 375-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V-8; Challenger R/T Scat Pack, 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker and SRT 392 with the 485-hp 6.4-liter Hemi V-8; and the Challenger SRT Hellcat with the 707-hp supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8.

For the Charger lineup, the vehicles sporting the purple hue include: the Charger SXT with 20-inch wheels and the 292- or 300-hp 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6; Charger R/T and R/T Road & Track with 370-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V-8; 485-hp Charger R/T Scat Pack and SRT 392; and Charger SRT Hellcat.

Dodge enthusiasts first saw Purple Crazy in the 1970s as part of the company's "high impact" paint jobs, which also included vivid colors with zany names such as Go Man Go, Top Banana, TorRed, Hemi Orange and SubLime. The outrageous color schemes were supposedly part of Dodge's strategy to gain competitive edge at the height of the muscle car wars with Ford, Chevrolet and AMC, according to the New York Daily News. Through the years, Purple Crazy was said to be the most requested hue from fans. "Since the Challenger and Charger returned to the market in 2006, just 11 percent of all the cars built are painted in a limited-edition hue, making them very collectable," Auto Guide reported.

Buyers will be able to order the 2016 Challengers and Chargers in Plum Crazy finery beginning in September.
