Jerold Joseph Williams, the missing Arizona 5-year-old found Monday afternoon, likely died from exposure, according to the Associated Press. The young boy vanished from his family's campsite on Thursday after chasing after grasshoppers.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy on Tuesday, one day after the boy's body was found by volunteers, according to the AP.

Autopsy results showed that exposure was the likely cause of death, and that the boy was unlikely to have survived the first night away from camp, according to NBC News.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office gave the following statement in a press release: "The weather had turned inclement early during the time he was missing. An autopsy was performed today and Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office preliminary findings appear to be accidental death due to environmental exposure."

Williams was found close to a service road in the Kaibab National Forest at about 4:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, according to the Arizona Daily Sun. He was found fully clothed and without any obvious external injuries.

It is likely the boy found his way to the road and began following it before inevitably stopping to rest, according to NBC News.

In the five days that Williams was missing, more than 1,000 people joined in the search enlisting military helicopters, ATVs, search dogs, and night vision equipment, according to the Arizona Daily Sun.

Officials found no evidence of foul play at the scene, according to the AP.
