Richard Matt, one of two convicted killers who escaped from a New York prison and lead police on a three-week chase, was drunk when border patrol agents shot and killed him in a forest, toxicology reports reveal.

Matt had a blood alcohol level of 0.18 percent, which is more than twice the intoxication level for driving under the influence under New York law, said authorities, according to the Associated Press.

The prison escape by Matt and fellow inmate David Sweat launched a three-week manhunt where police officers searched far and wide in order to capture the escapees.

Matt and Sweat both escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora after prison worker Joyce Mitchell facilitated their escape by providing them with various tools to cut through cell walls and a steam pipe.

Matt was shot and killed June 26 by a border patrol agent when he refused arrest, while Sweat was captured after he was shot two days later.
