The driver who smashed into the southern barricade of the US Capitol building with his car has been taken into custody. Police have investigated the crash site, and the South Barrier around the building is closed, according to CNNSeveral streets around the building are also closed while the Capitol police and Washington D.C. Fire Department investigate the site.

Antonio Pierorazio, the driver, is being held by police. His vehicle did not break through the barrier, but he did ram it at a high rate of speed. Pierorazio was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The car is registered to him and has been cleared by police. It does not contain any hazardous materials. The car, a Nissan, drove straight into the barrier from Independence Avenue. Police say they have finished their investigation as of Friday afternoon, according to CBS News.

The crash site is close to the parking lot used by members of the House when they are in session. Congress began a recess on Wednesday, so it's unlikely any members of the House were present when the crash occurred Friday morning.
