WhatsApp has released an update for its Android app with new features, including the option to mark selected messages as unread, according to The Independent.

Users can mark a message as unread by tapping and holding on any conversation, after which the status changes to green but does not affect the status of the read messages inside the chat or its chronological rank among other conversations, according to Android Police.

However, the sender will still be able to see the check marks alongside the message that indicate whether you have received and read the text; it only shows up as unread on your end to serve as a reminder to respond to someone at a another time.

The update introduces another useful feature that allows users to customize notifications for individual contacts. You can pick a specific tone, adjust the vibration length and choose to allow pop-up notifications for texts from a particular friend. Users will also be able to mute conversations for eight hours, one week, or one year, a feature only previously available in group conversations, according to PC Magazine.

At the moment these features have only been made available to Android users, who have to manually install the update from WhatsApp's page.
