Apple has reportedly acquired a Swedish software startup, AlgoTrim, which will help the company improve the performance of its smartphones and increase data storage.

Apple, the computer and consumer electronics giant, has reportedly purchased AlgoTrim, a Swedish data compression software developer, hoping to use the technology in its devices.

AlgoTrim, a data-compression software developer, was founded by Anders Berglund, Anders Holtsberg and Martin Lindberg in 2005. The company "builds codecs and designs solutions that maximize performance of data, mobile imaging, video and computer graphics while minimizing memory requirements," according to TechCrunch (via Rapidus).

The latest acquisition will be beneficial for the mobile making company as its devices including iPhones, iPads, and iPods come with limited storage. The Swedish company will design software that will compress the file size and enhance the processing of data. AlgoTrim also delivers "modern computational photography" to mobile phones, which will be very useful in improving the quality of images taken by the iPhone's camera.

The financial details of the deal remain unclear but according to a latest report from AllThingsD, an Apple representative subsequently confirmed that the deal did take place in a stock statement about acquisitions. "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," spokeswoman Kirstin Huguet told the tech news site.

According to Rapidus, Apple had set eyes on the Swedish start-up since the beginning of this year. In early February, all AlgoTrim shares were purchased by an anonymous Delaware-based holding company Wedgwood Industries LCC. But a legitimate source revealed to Rapidus that Apple was the "real buyer behind the deal."

Apple has been on a shopping spree of late. The Cuppertino bought several start up companies to enhance its services. Some of the services that it acquired in the recent months include, Embark, Passif Semiconductor, Locationary, Hopstop, and Matcha.
