Rafting expedition leaders on the Nolichucky River in Tennessee noticed a black bear cub on the same beach for three consecutive days. The bear appeared to be orphaned and in distress. On day four, the 5-week-old bruin started to approach the boats and the rafters were able to get the bear cub into the boat, where she snacked on berries, applesauce and grapes.

The bear, named Noli Bear (after the river), weighs only about 15 pounds, according to Grind TV. High Mountain Expeditions guide Danny "Shaggy" Allen rescued Noli, who is now being cared for at Appalachian Bear Rescue in Townsend.

Bear rescue owner, Dana Dodd, said that Noli was "severely dehydrated and may have been suffering from heat stroke." Dodd told Grind TV that the cub was "near death."

Some might call Allen a hero, but he and his colleagues are facing possible fines for removing wildlife. "We weren't going to sit there and watch that bear die," High Mountain Guides spokesman Mark Russ told Grind TV. "We had guests on our rafts and they wanted us to save it, but even if we didn't have guests we felt we had to do something."

Dodd said Noli is climbing and starting to get feisty, which is a good sign that she'll be able to be returned to the wild later this year.
