"Minions" ruled the weekend box office, racking up an impressive $115.2 million debut in North America, according to Variety. The "Despicable Me" spinoff is the second biggest opening ever for an animated film, falling just short of "Shrek the Third's" $121.6 million in 2007.

"Minions" is just the fourth animated film to make more than $100 million in its opening weekend. The other two films are "Toy Story 3" and "Shrek 2."

The prequel raked in an impressive $400 million worldwide followed by Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Terminator Genisys" and the Chris Pratt-led "Jurassic World," according to Deadline.

It has been a good summer for Universal studios, which is winning the summer box office thanks to "Minions" and "Jurassic World." The dinosaur movie made $877.2 million worldwide since it came out, making it the studio's highest grossing film of all time and the seventh highest grossing film ever internationally.

"Minions" stars the voices of Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm and Michael Keaton.
