A county clerk in Sioux Falls, S.D., was overheard threatening to marry her dog since she was so disgusted with the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage, according to Raw Story.

The comment, made June 29 at the Minnehaha County Treasurer’s Office, was overheard by Ellee Spawn as she waited in line with her daughter, reported KSFY.

“‘Well, apparently, I’m just going to marry my dog because we can just marry who we want,’” Spawn heard the female clerk say. “That was wrong—you can’t compare beastiality with two consenting adults getting married. They’re not the same thing.”

“She’s got the right to think what she wants to think and the right to say what she wants to say—not on taxpayer property, not on the taxpayer payroll. That I have an issue with,” continued Spawn. “I’m not going to fund her hate speech. And I don’t think you should.”

KSFY spoke to Minnehaha County Treasurer Pam Nelson about the incident. “My employees are told they’re not supposed to make personal comments about anything personal or political,” she said. “They shouldn’t be talking other than business at their windows.”

Nelson also stated that she spoke with the clerk who made the controversial comment and she said it was all just a misunderstanding—she was, apparently, just talking about her love for her dog.
