A small private plane crashed into a house on Sunday in Plainville, Mass., killing all three people onboard and engulfing the house in flames as residents fled to safety outside, reported The Boston Globe.

"As a result of the plane crash, the house immediately caught fire. The four occupants of the single family home were able to get out of the building before it became fully engulfed in flames. The three occupants of the plane were killed in the crash," Massachusetts State Police said in a statement, according to CNN.

The aircraft, a Beechcraft BE36, crashed through the roof of the house at approximately 5:45 p.m., according to the FAA. The plane took off from Lancaster Airport in Pennsylvania and was on its way to Norwood Memorial Airport in Massachusetts, according to Reuters.

Plainville Fire Chief Justin Alexander said they received multiple emergency calls reporting a huge fire and a plane crash immediately after the incident. Approximately 50 firefighters arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire nearly three hours later, according to The Sun Chronicle.

The FAA said it would work in conjunction with the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate and determine the probable cause of the plane crash.
