Country singer Shania Twain experienced the betrayal of a lifetime when her husband ran off with her best friend. But now the star opened up to the New York Post about how she's coped after learning about their 2008 affair, which prompted a wife-swap.

"When that happened, I thought, 'Forget it, this is more than I can handle - I'm never going to sing again,'" Twain told the Post. "I had to grieve through it."

The "That Don't Impress Me Much" singer is talking about the illness she suffered after she found out Lange was having an affair with her best friend Marie-Anne Theibaud. She was diagnosed with dysphonia, a disorder that impairs the vocal box, the Daily Mail reports. It affected her career and she stopped performing for eight years following her diagnosis.

"It's hard to explain," Twain told the Post. "When you have an impairment in the voice-box area, it affects you psychologically - you get gun-shy: 'Can I go for that note, that sound?' It's a vicious cycle."

But the country star wasn't down for long and credits her 2011 marriage with current husband, Switzerland-born and Nestle executive Frederic Thiebaud, with her ability to bounce back. Thiebaud is also her former friend's ex-husband and the two fell in love in a surprising turn of events. Her son, 13-year-old Eja, is also another person in her life that inspires Twain to keep going, according to Fox News. She said she keeps things civil with her ex-husband for her son's sake, but she has no room in her life for her ex-best friend.

"I don't see her, ever," Twain told the Post, of her former friend Marie-Anne. "I don't invite that trigger into my life ... She's not my future - she's my past."
