Amidst the whole affair with Joyce Mitchell, helping David Sweat and Richard Matt escape Clinton Correctional Facility, one person has remained silent: her husband, Lyle Mitchell.

He broke his silence recently and talked to NBC News about what his wife told him after the escape.

In the interview with "Today" host Matt Lauer, Lyle recalled that, on the drive back home from the police barracks, Joyce admitted to aiding in the escape.

When he asked her what was going on she said, "I just... I did some things... and I got over my head."

He later revealed that Joyce admitted to giving the prisoners tools to saw through their cells and escape from the correctional facility through pipes and back channels.

Lyle also said, according to Newsday, that Sweat and Matt offered to give her pills to knock him out so she could pick them up after they escaped. She said, "there was a plan to kill you [Lyle]."

That was the point when Joyce had a change of heart and backed out, claimed her husband. "When it came down to her hurting me, that's when she said something was wrong. She said she was in too deep, she didn't know how to get out of it."

He noted that she admitted to showing Matt "a little affection." However, "she swore on her son's life that definitely, 'Never have I ever had sex [with either man],'" said Lyle.

What's truly tragic about this ordeal is that Lyle is truly conflicted. He said: "Do I still love her? Yes. Am I a mad? Yes."

Lyle might still love Joyce, but when asked if he was going to stand by her, he said, "As of right now, I don't know what to think. I do not know."
