Police have confirmed that the gunman who opened fire on the Dallas Police Department's headquarters early Saturday was shot and killed by officers.

The suspect identified himself as James Boulware to the police, claiming they labeled him a terrorist, which made him lose custody of his child. He planned the assault in retaliation, said Police Chief David Brown.

Boulware was killed after police shot him through the windshield of the van he was driving, about an hour before dawn hit, after he made more threats, following a chase that ended in a standoff at a Jack in the Box parking lot in Hutchins.

"We believe this suspect meant to kill officers. We barely survived the intentions of this suspect," Brown told reporters.

Police did not confirm the death of the suspect until Saturday afternoon because a bomb squad had to inspect his vehicle since he told officers that he had explosives, according to CNN.

Andrew Boulware, the gunman's brother, said that the entire family is still in shock and were happy that nobody else got hurt in the incident, according to the Wall Street Journal.
