Those who run their laptop, PC or mobile device with the Windows 8 operating system have a lot to look forward to on October 17. On that day at 7 a.m. ET / 4 a.m. PT, Microsoft will release its update to the os, Windows 8.1 for free to all users through a free upgrade or download on the Windows Store. ABC News reports the new version of the operating system will be available from retailers and come stock on all new devices one day later on October 18.

"It's very exciting to be delivering Windows 8.1 to consumers just before Windows 8 celebrates its one-year anniversary," Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc wrote in a blog post announcing the news.

Since Window's took a radical design shift to a drastically different operating system than previous incarnations of Windows. This one was optimized for mobile devices and replaced the standard Start Button with a tile menu that is perfect for tablets and touchscreen smartphones, but not the best for laptops or desktop devices. Since Windows 8's design shift on October 26, 2012, users have been complaining about the design and pointing out various flaws. Microsoft has said the Windows 8.1 update is a direct result of that feedback and will even be bringing back the famous and familiar Start Button.

The Start Button will be located in the left hand corner of the screen, when tapped it will bring up the familiar menu complete with tiles of all the features loaded onto your Microsoft device. The company has even made it easier to arrange the live tile apps.

"We've learned a lot from customers in how they are using the product and have received a lot of feedback," Antoine Leblond, corporate vice president of Windows Program Management, said in a blog post earlier this year. "We've been watching, we've been listening."
