Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner attend the "Devotion" Premiere at Cinesphere on September 12, 2022 in Toronto, Ontario. Turner recently described the former couple's children as "victims" in their contentious split.

Actress Sophie Turner said that her two children are the "victims" in her contentious divorce with pop star Joe Jonas, during an expansive British Vogue interview where she discussed her career, mental health and parenting.

Turner, 28, married Jonas, 34, in 2019 - just weeks before her star-making television show "Game of Thrones" aired its finale. The couple's marriage broke down in 2023 - with Turner suing Jonas in international court because he refused to allow their American-born children to reside with her in the United Kingdom, as they'd previously agreed.

"'I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn't leave," Turner explained. "My kids were in the States and I couldn't get to them because I had to finish [forthcoming British television show] 'Joan.'"

"I'm unhappy with the way everything played out, especially when it comes to my children. They're the victims in all of this. But I think we're doing the best we can," she told British Vogue.

During the interview, Turner also spoke about her friendship with pop superstar Taylor Swift. Like Turner, Swift also had a relationship with Jonas. The teenage romance ended with a 27-second phone call - supposedly inspiring several songs on the albums "Fearless" and "Speak Now."

"Taylor was an absolute hero to me this year," Turner told British Vogue. The British actress explained that when she was trying to settle her custody dispute with Jonas, she was unsure where she would stay in the United States. Turner said that she initially reached out to Swift to ask if she knew of anyone renting their New York residences. Instead, the singer allowed Turner and her children to move into her home.

"I've never been more grateful to anyone than I am for her because she took my children and me, and provided us with a home and a safe space," she said. "She really has a heart of gold."

Though Turner expressed gratitude for the help she received from her loved ones, she characterized the custody dispute as "the worst" days of her life.

"I would call my lawyer saying, 'I can't do this. I just can't.' I was just never strong enough to stand up for myself," she told British Vogue. "And then, finally, after two weeks of me being in a rut, she reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for."

"Once anyone says to me, 'Do it for your kids,' I'm doing it. I wouldn't do it for myself, but I'll find the strength for them."
