A South Carolina grand jury indicted former police office Michael Slager for shooting and killing an unarmed black man on Monday.

Michael Slager was charged for the April incident "almost immediately" after video of the shooting surfaced, according to The Associated Press. The footage, which surfaced directly after the April 4 shooting, showed Slager, a 33-year-old white man, firing eight shots at 50-year-old black man Walter Scott.

Scott was originally pulled over for driving with a broken taillight. He fled the scene, and a chase culminated in a nearby park. The video begins in the park, capturing Slager firing his taser at Scott, according to The New York Times.

"Something - it is not clear whether it is the stun gun - is either tossed or knocked to the ground behind the two men, and Officer Slager draws his gun, the video shows," The New York Times points out. "When the officer fires, Mr. Scott appears to be 15 to 20 feet away and fleeing. He falls after the last of eight shots. The officer then runs back toward where the initial scuffle occurred and picks something up off the ground. Moments later, he drops an object near Mr. Scott's body, the video shows."

Prosecutor Scarlett Wilson announced the indictment. In April, she said the case does not call for the death penalty due to lack of "aggravating circumstances such as robbery or kidnapping as required under South Carolina law." Slager faces 30 years to life in prison if a jury convicts him.
