German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently shared her opinion about Facebook, saying that the social networking platform is nice, just like having a car or an ordinary washing machine.

"It's nice that you have it. This is so beautiful, as you have a car or a decent washing machine," she said while speaking at a church in Stuttgart on Friday, according to German newspaper Bild.

The German chancellor said that the social network Facbook is an asset for contacting people and getting in touch with friends, but it's better to meet up with friends in real life to socialize.

"The pure existence of Facebook does not mean that I automatically have great friends," she said, reported The Independent.

"I have a Facebook page in my capacity as party leader and I think that for a lot of people Facebook is great," she replied when a young boy asked her about social network. "It's not as if Facebook will make you happy in life."

Merkel also favored the need for internet rules. "Let us be curious about the new world, but let us not forget the standards in the federal republic that have made a good life worth living," she said, according to DW.

Merkel, who has more than one million Facebook likes on her official page, joined the Instagram social network last week. However, the government forced her to turn her Instagram page into a German-only site due to a flood of Russian foul language, according to DPA news agency.

"The social media offerings of the federal government are generally in the German language. In the interests of readability, comments in other languages-aside from English language comments," a government spokesperson said.

Merkel, the world's most powerful woman according to Forbes' list, has not shown a social media friendly personality and is known for guarding her privacy. She has an official Facebook page but has not opted for Twitter, reported Reuters.
