A 6-year-old Russian girl has died as a hero, saving her brother from boiling water.

Masha Yantuganova was reported to have been playing with her 18-month-old brother Dima at their home in the village of Suuk-Chishma in the Russian Republic of Bashkortostan when the tragedy took place, according to The Liberal.

Reports claim that Dima accidently tripped on a cable connected to an electric kettle, which fell over as a result. Masha saw the water spill across the table and jumped across the room to push her brother out of the way, taking the scalding hot water instead and receiving third degree burns on 60 percent of her body.

Masha's parents said they were in the garden of their home when the incident occurred, the Daily Mail reported. Her mother Tatyana said she heard her daughter's screaming when she ran outside in search of her parents. She added, however, that despite the burns, Masha wasn't crying.

"She was in terrible pain but didn't cry as she didn't want to worry me," Tatyana said. "She just kept saying that I had to take care of Dima."

Tatyana then soaked both of her children in icy water while other family members tried calling for an ambulance, but they didn't receive an answer, the Daily Mail reported. The mother then borrowed a neighbor's car and took her kids to a local hospital, where they had to wait for an hour to see a doctor. When the doctors arrived, they covered Dima's body in ointment and said they had run out and didn't have enough for Masha.

The mother than drove her daughter to another hospital, but Masha lost consciousness on the way there. She was taken into intensive care once they arrived, but she later died.

"She died because of lack of first aid," Tatyana said, adding that her son had burns on 40 percent of his body but was alive since he received treatment.
