For some time now, Angelina Jolie has been rumored as Marvel Studios' top choice to helm the upcoming female led superhero flick "Captain Marvel." Today comes a few more details on that in addition to the possibility of Charlize Theron ("Monster," "Hancock") starring in the titular role.

Nothing is official so this is still just an unconfirmed rumor at this time. But according to a source at OK! Magazine (via Yahoo!), Jolie and Theron have formed a close friendship in recent months and are open to the idea of pairing up for Marvel's first female-centered flick.

"Marvel has been courting Angie to direct the project and Charlize is a clear fan favorite for the starring role. If Charlize were to get the part, Angie would almost certainly sign on to work with her new pal," reads the article.

Theron is no stranger to the super hero and action genres. She can be seen most recently kicking some major ass in "Mad Max: Fury Road" and was also a handful to deal with in the Will Smith led super hero comedy "Hancock." Her Academy Award for her work in 2004's "Monster" can only help her case as a live-action Carol Danvers. However, this is the first time Theron has been mentioned in relation to the role. Previous rumors have seen Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt and Katheryn Winnick all emerge as possibilities.

Jolie may be the harder get of the two. Although "Unbroken" underwhelmed at the box office and with critics, it was the third film directed by Jolie to explore real-life drama and the struggle to overcome adversity. Those themes, while commonly featured in comic book films, don't always come across as genuine within the super hero genre. It's unclear if Jolie would be interest in even making the attempt, as her connections to the project have consistently been brought up in rumor articles and unconfirmed reports such as this one.
