A fire at a small clinic in the northern part of Syria has killed 25 people, most of which were children.

State news agency SANA said that a total of 30 people were also injured after a fuel tank exploded in the Maysalun clinic in Qamishli on Sunday, according to Business Insider.

The channel added that dry branches had caught fire and the flame extended to the clinic's fuel tank, which detonated.

A doctor on the scene said the survivors were treated for burns. The clinic is also said to have suffered from "significant material damage", the Agence France-Presse reported.

Qamishli is located on the border of Turkey, right near the northeastern Hasakeh province in Syria. Control over the city is currently divided between Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's loyal regime troops and Kurdish forces.

So far, the small town has been spared from the conflict and violence happening in other parts of Syria, AFP reported This conflict has resulted in over 200,000 deaths since it started with demonstrations against the government on March 2011.
